"Lord of Yrself: Paintings and drawings by Elisa Flynn" opens Saturday, October 8th
2 pm - 4 pm

Hi Anita,

You're invited to the opening reception for "Lord of Yrself: Paintings and Drawings by Elisa Flynn" on Saturday, October 8th from 2 pm - 4 pm. The reception is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available.

"Lord of Yourself" © Elisa Flynn

The works in the exhibition are mystical in feel, and draw the viewer into landscapes populated by strange creatures. Traces of humankind and its destructive tendencies are seeded throughout.

Flynn was a longtime resident of the Danbury/Bethel area, now living in Brooklyn, NY. Elisa received a degree in Fine Art from SUNY Purchase in painting and printmaking, and has worked as a fine arts registrar for many years. She is a performing musician, and has exhibited her visual art in the Northeast and Callfornia.

She was one of the six co-op members who ran Gallery Thirteen on Library Place in Danbury in the late 1990s, and was a member of several musical groups in the area including Freak Baby and Jargon Society. From 2012 to 2020 she produced the music and spoken word series Tripeg Lobo, in Brooklyn, NY and New Haven, CT.

The exhibition will be on view through December 23d. Regular gallery hours are 8:30 am - 5 pm Monday through Friday.

Please note, we will be closed on Monday, October 10th for Indigenous Peoples Day.

If you have any questions, please contact me at 203-791-1474 or email me at gallery@stillrivereditions.com.

Announcement from the Institute Library | Looking Toward October 2022

The Institute Library Story Sharing Group Welcomes You to

Tellabration! 2022

For the 9th year running, the Institute Library is hosting Tellabration!, a celebration of oral storytelling.

The four Tellabration! workshops

and the final performances are all open to the public. Newbies & experienced storytellers: join in!

You may be intimidated or worried: Can I tell a story to a roomful of people? But the fact is, you tell stories all the time.

Talking to your partner about your day, telling your boss about a project you've been working on, telling your grandchild about what their parent was like as a child, telling your co-workers about what your cat did this morning, reading a favorite book to your students.

This is all storytelling!

What we do is give you a chance to hone your storytelling style:

Give it some zip, a kick, some oomph.

Tellabration! involves four workshops,

during which each participant chooses a story and prepares it for public telling.

Stories may be in any genre. Most people choose to work on a personal story but some might choose to retell a classic fairy tale or a bit of local folklore. After the workshops, those who choose to do so tell their stories at the Tellabration! evening performances. Tellabration! performances take place across the state of Connecticut;

this group's event will, for the 9th year in a row, be hosted by the Institute Library.

TICKETS to TELLABRATION!:

The Whole Story

Tickets to the series of FOUR WORKSHOPS are priced at two rates:

$45 for those not members of the Institute Library

$30 for active members of the Institute Library

This ticket price includes entry to Tellabration! in November.

Please use this link to purchase tickets via credit/debit card.

TELLABRATION! EVENTS:

Wednesday, November 2, 2022

Thursday, November 3, 2022.

Both evenings at 7:30 p.m.

Two evenings have been reserved to ensure time for all who which to present their stories.

The Story Sharing group asks that all participants be masked and fully vaccinated for the workshops. Should ticket prices prove a hardship for you, please join in regardless: we do not wish to exclude anyone.

If you cannot join the workshops, we hope that you will join the Tellabration audience on the evenings of November 2-3 and hear the workshop tellers tell their stories. Details will be forthcoming closer to the time.

Should you have any questions regarding the Story Sharing group's regular meetings or Tellabration!, please reach out to the coordinator, Arnie Pritchard: apritchard01@snet.net, or phone 203-804-4814.

Can't miss programs with Wee the People:
Join us in honoring Indigenous Peoples Day with this interactive workshop hosted by Wee the People of Boston!

Saturday, October 8th // 10:30AM – 12:30PM

Water Protectors: Exploring Indigenous Identity and Climate Change is a program that helps children and their families understand indigenous values, rethink how they understand land, and promote activism.

When kids look at maps of the US, they are taught to see its land and waters in terms of who owns or controls them. But what if there were a different way of seeing these places -- and what if that different way of seeing held the key to protecting our planet? In this interactive workshop, we explore the sacred connection Indigenous peoples have nurtured with water and land for thousands of years.

  • FREE program
  • Recommended for all ages
  • Registration required
  • Drop-in program
  • Open to the public

Penelope’s Odyssey to Premiere at The Bushnell October 20-21

In order to be able to reach more of our community, we have moved Penelope's Odyssey to October 20 and 21 at the Bushnell's Belding Theater.

The project features underwater dance projected onto the Bushnell's backdrops, edited by Emmy Award Winning Director Ryan Glista and scored by international composer Jeph Vanger from Athen's Greece. Multiple videos are interspersed in the 90-minute, high energy, fast paced modern dance performance. The cast of seven men and women includes dancers from across Connecticut, New York and Italy.

"One of the most important parts of this collaboration is community - and for us, that means offering $5 tickets to Hartford Residents, Capital Community College and Trinity College staff and faculty. We have a long history in Hartford and with these educational intuitions.  We hope to collaborate with more organizations in Hartford as we emerge from the isolation and darkness of the pandemic."

The code for $5 tickets for Hartford Residents is: STUDENT5 or HARTFORD5

The 4th Annual Five-Themes Project
One Puzzle, Five Galleries, Many Solutions...

THE FIVE-THEMES PROJECT: For this season Manifest has again created a very special set of exhibitions calling for participation—the Five Theme Project. The project will be made up of five concurrent interrelated thematic shows that will be presented at Manifest from January 27 - February 24, 2023. The five interrelated themes allow for visitors to the gallery to uncover a story, connections between works and the separate shows, and discover a 'whole' that is even more compelling than the individual works that make it up.

This will be the fourth in what has become a much-loved annual concept. This year we explore a spectrum of places and lenses through which humans relate to their more personal world.

Submission deadline: October 16, 2022
