"A Suspension of Perception" works by Christine Breslin
January 12 – March 12
2023 is Clare Gallery’s 20th anniversary year! A Suspension of Perception is Clare Gallery’s new exhibition of large-scale photographs by Christine Breslin, a National Endowment for the Arts recipient and longtime Hartford, Connecticut, photographer and educator. Breslin’s images focus their attention on migrants and immigrants from areas south of our country’s border. Her work asks us to look and listen to her subjects’ stories. More importantly, it challenges us to reflect on our own understanding of collective humanity—who we are, where we come from, what we choose to do with our lives, and how we can help each other. Breslin wishes her audience to slow down and “suspend” their preconceived perceptions of others, trusting in the dignity
of being human together.

“Life can often seem like a contained, predictable, and familiar loop. Located on the corners of our daily life are moments of respite from the chaos. Food, work, people, rest, dreams, truths. These exist as checkpoints that ground us in our own lived experience.
Garrett brings together materials, craft, and humor to create unique, exaggerated objects that up-end the logic of this cycle. Food that can be played, tools that can be eaten.
All of them invite the viewer to experience in unison, the edges of the day.
Anna Leigh Clem:
“Tucked into the Garden Bed”
Inspired by my childhood garden, which no longer exists physically, I searched to rediscover lost innocence. Using my parents’ present-day garden as my guide, I witnessed the full cycle—from the first spears of growth until their inevitable demise. I took photos of what I saw there, trying to capture the essence of place, and myself in it.
Entranced by the vibrancy of the summer season, I turned to the anthotype photographic process. Using the flower’s pigment to make light-sensitive emulsions, my garden photographs were impressed upon the botanical distillations by the sun’s rays. The results are like jars of preserves, emphasizing the photograph’s inherent stillness and marked "death" of the subject. This act of collection and preservation initially transformed the garden's passing into something more lasting than a bloom, yet due to the instability of both anthotypes and life alike, became an exercise in acceptance—of petals falling to the ground.

At the Delamar West Hartford
This winter, the NBMAA presents two exhibitions inspired by a major donation of important contemporary photographs by Baltimore-based collectors Nancy and Tom O’Neil: Edward Burtynsky: Earth Observed and In Focus: Photographs from the O’Neil Collection.
In Focus: Photographs from the O’Neil Collection represents the newest exhibition in a series of curated shows that the NBMAA has presented for the hotel since 2016. The Delamar’s ground floor will feature significant works by Rocky Schenck (b. 1955), Abelardo Morell (b. 1948), and Richard Kagan (b. 1945), whose innovative depictions of landscapes and interiors showcase diverse photographic techniques and transport one’s imagination. On the second floor, a group of works by George Tice (b. 1938) highlight the photographer’s mastery and wide range of quintessentially American subject matter.
WPKN Independent Community Radio and The Gallery Upstairs at The Institute Library are collaborating on an event to celebrate Women’s History Month, and we want YOU to participate!
How?
By making art for an exhibition of fake album covers celebrating women.
Imagine bands we'd like to see, rework one that exists, or make up an all-new album and performer. Protest, celebrate, rewrite history,
imagine a future, dream a dance craze...
The idea is to create a visual and sonic tribute to musical women everywhere. This is a unique celebration of women’s history month through images words and music. We consider “women” to be all who wish to identify as such, and we celebrate by creating an inclusive space for breadth and diversity of vision.
We invite you to apply to Peters Valley School of Craft’s 53rd Annual Juried Craft Fair that will be held at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta, NJ. The show receives approximately 5,000 attendees mainly from NJ, NY, PA, CT. The show is advertised extensively throughout the tri-state area and on social media. There is a web page featuring all participating artists with links to individual websites. Cash prizes will be awarded.
