"The Orlando Project" Kathryn Geismar
“Orlando had become a woman – there is no denying it. But in every other respect, Orlando remained precisely as he had been. The change of sex, though it altered their future, did nothing whatever to alter their identity.” Virginia Woolf, Orlando Virginia Woolf’s book, Orlando, presents the first genderqueer protagonist that I know of in modern Western literature. The book is a humorously gilded argument for identity formation without the impingement of societal norms or expectations. Orlando begins the book as a male, and then transitions to female in an organic unfolding of self-discovery. The Orlando Project provided me the opportunity to view my own child’s identity development with an eye to their unfolding gender expression, free from the constraints of my expectations and guided by my love for the person themself.

Ying Ye to Give an Artist Talk and Performance at Real Art Ways with Hartford Art School's Billie Lee Thursday, 10/5 | 5:30pm |
HARTFORD, CONN. Real Art Ways will present an artist talk and gallery performance with Ying Ye on Thursday, October 5 at 5:30pm. Burn the Midnight Oil is a multi-media installation that's based on her experience working in a family-owned restaurant in Connecticut. The exhibition will be on view through Sunday, October 8. Our galleries are open from 2-9pm seven days a week. Gallery admission is free. |
|
Ying Ye will discuss her artistic practice and delve deeper into her exhibition Burn the Midnight at Real Art Ways. The gallery installation combines elements of performance, sculpture, video, and text to define her experience as a Chinese-American who immigrated from China to the United States. Working in her family's restaurant China Eagle, located in Ellington, CT has played an important role in shaping her art, especially this exhibition. Throughout Burn the Midnight Oil, Ye examines the use of soybeans in the making of tofu (especially in terms of fragile tofu skin), referencing the process as a metaphor for her family's experience as Chinese immigrants and workers in the food industry. |

COMMUNITY OFFRENDA WITH CARLOS HERNÁNDEZ CHÁVEZ |
Thursday, October 12—Sunday, November 19 Featured in accompaniment to Between Life and Death this traditional ofrenda by Hartford-based artist Carlos Hernández Chávez will be installed in the contemporary gallery where all are invited to contribute personal photos or other remembrances of their dearly departed. These decorated altars are a long-held Mexican tradition during Día de Muertos, built and dressed in cemeteries, homes, and other places of importance or worship. They explore the thin veil that separates life from death and serve as a physical place to remember ancestors and warmly invite their temporary return to the world of the living. The muertos, or deceased, are honored during their visit with food, drink, flowers, photos, and other gifts that are placed on the ofrenda.
Please note that items left on the altar cannot be returned. Copies of photos or other prized possessions are encouraged. |

Announcement from the Institute Library | Autumn, 2023 |
|
The Institute Library Story Sharing Group is gearing up for its tenth annual workshop series and Tellabration performance. Experienced tellers and newbies are invited to join us!
The truth is: No one is ever really a newbie when it comes to storytelling. All of us tell stories all the time – when we update the boss on our latest project, or tell our partner about our day, or tell our kids about the weird thing we did back in middle school.
The Story Sharing group just makes the process feel more deliberate.
We begin with four workshops, during which each participant chooses a story and prepares it for public telling, with the help of feedback from the other participants. Stories may be of any genre; most of the stories we hear come from the tellers’ own lives, but if you want to share your version of Jack and the Beanstalk, that’s fine! Those who choose to do so will tell their stories at a public performance, a “Tellabration”, which is one of many Tellabration sites across Connecticut every Fall.
The story sharing group is informal, friendly, and fun. |
