Words in Clay, Words on Paper James Finnegan & Michelle CotugnoExhibit runs: through April 23, 2022
This exhibit will honor the written word, highlighting the dynamic collaboration between writers and artists. Sculptural clay works by Michelle Cotugno will be displayed along with a selection of fine letterpress poetry broadsides selected by James Finnegan. Michelle Cotugno reverses the notion of ‘ekphrasis’ (writers speaking to/about art); here the artist creates the physical object from clay on which she prints, letter by letter, words of poets and writers that speak to her. James Finnegan has selected the broadsides that will accompany Cotugno’s artwork. He called upon many letterpress printers throughout New England to contribute their broadsides, with attention to works by Connecticut poets. |
|
Artist Talk and Printers Panel: Sat. March 26, 2PM. Michelle Cotugno will speak about her artwork, followed by brief presentations by letterpress printers, including: Gary Metras (Adastra Press); Barry Sternlieb (Mad River Press) with collaborating artist Julio Grande; Greg Joly (Bull Thistle Press); Ed Rayher (Swamp Press); Robin Price (Robin Price Printer); Jenni Friedman (Stone Dragon Press); John O’Donnell (Counterproof Press). Event hosted by Jim Finnegan.

It's true! Harvey has a new autobiography and he's coming to talk about it with us. The legendary actor, writer and LGBTQ+ icon chats with Real Art Ways Executive Director Will K. Wilkins.
"Harvey has been an inspiration to me since I saw Torch Song Trilogy in the early 80’s. We became friends in Connecticut in the early 90’s. I look forward to re-connecting about his memoir, and talking about his passions, his perspectives on life, love, art and politics, dogs, carnival memorabilia, and wherever else the conversation takes us!” - Will K. Wilkins |

LET THEM ROAM FREELYLet Them Roam Freely is a two-person exhibition presenting newly commissioned projects and recent work by Hong Hong and Darryl DeAngelo Terrell that focus on the creation of portals through physical movement. A portal is a bridge, a gateway, a tunnel to a different time and space. Hong’s and Terrell’s respective practices evoke gateways linked to personal, communal, and cultural histories. They use performance-based methods to embody and document their passage, resulting in large-scale work on paper for Hong and photography and sound for Terrell.

Blake Brasher: “Experiencing Something”
The paintings in this exhibition are layered compositions done in acrylic and marker with the occasional use of watercolor, pencil, and collaged elements on large canvases or smaller sheets of textured polypropylene paper. These abstract mind-scapes create propositional spaces that engage the imagination.

| Barb Cone: “Improvisations” It may be because everything feels pretty broken these days that I continue to improvise with humble, sometimes intentionally damaged, materials, but then again it may be because humble, broken or damaged materials are simply more interesting. For Improvisations I’ve made free-standing pieces from odds and ends of gessoed balsa and basswood. Borrowing imagery from the constructions, I prepared digital drawings on Hahnemuhle paper, placing them under photo-based clear overlays I designed in Photoshop.

Amy Genser: Shifting February 5, 2022 - December 3, 2023
Connecticut artist Amy Genser works with paper and paint to explore her ongoing obsession with texture, pattern, and color. Using paper as pigment, she layers, cuts, rolls, and combines the humble material into vibrant tableaux that are inspired by the natural world—the flow of water, the shape of beehives, the organic irregularity of plants, and more. For her site-specific installation at Fuller Craft Museum, Shifting, Genser explores the mutable beauty of the museum’s natural surroundings, the power of each season, and the beautiful transitions in between. The exhibition is made possible by support from the Caroline R. Graboys Fund. Fuller Craft Museum455 Oak StreetBrockton, MA 02301 |

Join Charter Oak Cultural Center for a concert presentation of the moving new jazz opera Dear Erich, set against a backdrop of World War II and the Holocaust. Dear Erich was inspired by 200 newly discovered letters written in Germany between 1938 and 1941 by Herta Rosenthal to her son Erich, composer Ted Rosenthal's father.
Dear Erich tells a refugee story for our times. How can a family cope as the walls of their nation's hatred close in around them? For those who escape, what lies ahead? Even in the land of the free, are they ever really free? What if they never learn the fate of loved ones left behind and the communications just stopped? What does closure mean, why does remembrance matter, where does hope come from?
Part of Charter Oak Cultural Center's 16th Annual Celebration of Jewish Arts & Culture. |

MIMIC A Call for Works Exploring Replication or Simulation Are there trustworthy reasons for trying to appear as something that you are not? In nature, mimicry allows certain creatures to survive: hiding via camouflage, or deterring predators by baring poisonous colors. Creating an illusion through verisimilitude is a foundational part of all kinds of art, and reflects the skill and sensitivity of the maker. Mimicry implies a reverence for life; successful imitation requires knowing what it copies well. What does mimicry reveal about the original? Is the illusion even better than the original? MIMIC is a call for works about replication, simulation, and the relationship between life and illusion. Submission deadline: March 20, 2022 For complete details and to apply online visit: http://www.manifestgallery.org/mimic email info@manifestgallery.org with any questions
4. DEADLINE: May 1, 2022 (gallery exhibit for current & recent MFA/MA/PhD students)
MASTER PIECES 16th Annual Exhibit for Emerging Masters Open to current graduate students and MFA/MA/PhD degree recipients since January 2021 Note: Manifest's board of directors has approved a special entry fee level for this project in order to make it more accessible to students. Every year Manifest offers an opportunity just for current and recent graduate students to exhibit at our gallery in Cincinnati. This 16th installment of the Master Pieces project will continue to reveal the intensity and professionalism of students working towards their terminal academic degree in the field of art or design. Often the most exceptional work comes out of these artists’ immersion in their culture of study and intellectual pursuit. Manifest’s goal, therefore, is to select works that set the standard of quality that the artist is expected to maintain throughout his or her professional career and justify the degree of Master. The full-color hardcover Manifest Exhibition Annual publication, a 'yearbook' for the season, will serve as a visual documentation of these artists’ own benchmarks for years to come. Submission deadline: May 1, 2022 For complete details and to apply online visit: http://www.manifestgallery.org/masterpieces email info@manifestgallery.org with any questions
