Why We Need New National Parks:
A Natural Extension of Olmsted’s Vision

A lecture by Michael Kellett
Kellett is cofounder and Executive Director of RESTORE: The North Woods, a Massachusetts and Maine-based conservation organization. With more than 30 years of experience working to create parks, save forests, and protect wildlife, Kellett will review our current challenges and suggest strategies for solving them with the proven power of public parks. The evening will feature a reception, and a first look at some of the top 100 areas for new National Parks.

Gallery on the Green presents “A. Walter Kendra: A Life in Art” plus a Group Show, “Down to Earth”
Canton, CT - now through Saturday, May 21, 2022

The Gallery on the Green presents a retrospective of prints, paintings, and drawings by Connecticut artist A. Walter Kendra, who has devoted more than 60 years to creating work that speaks to his passion for architecture, landscape, and nature, especially nature. The exhibition displays the evolution of his studio practice over the years, revealing startling differences as well as continuity as Kendra transforms his direct observations of the world around him into abstractions.  “All of my work is abstracted from nature, and there’s an echo of representation in them, yet they transcend that. I always like my work to transcend, not mimic color or form.”

Footnotes and other embedded stories showcases new works by the 2021–2022 Happy and Bob Doran Connecticut Artists-in-Residence: Leonard Galmon, Ruby Gonzalez Hernandez, Allison Minto, Julia Rooney, and Joseph Smolinski. The residency is co-administered by Artspace New Haven and the Yale University Art Gallery.

Footnotes and other embedded stories takes its point of departure from the tiny number that leads to an adjacent text at the bottom of a page. Within research, a footnote acts as a hypertext—disclosing a source, highlighting a reference, tracing a line from thought to thought. Outside of academic contexts they arise in conversational tangents, offering readers, viewers, speakers, and thinkers the opportunity to delve deeper, to embed themselves within the root of the text.

Sonia Plumb Dance Company Announces "The Pearl!"
SPDC is thrilled to announce our newest project and first performance of 2022 – The Pearl. Through a poetic interweaving of projected photography and choreography, dancers share the struggles they each endure between their conditioned selves and their true nature.

“The Pearl” is designed to provoke poignant, honest dialogue by intimately confronting the destructive nature of commercially propagated norms. Seven dancers embodying diversity in cultures, genres, ages and ethnicities dance with their digitally projected selves in an intimate setting. Audiences may sit on the periphery or in the center of the action. Seating is capped at 30 per performance.

Performances will be held May 11-14. A preview performance will be held on May 10. All performances will be held at our new space at 960 Main Street, Hartford, CT (the former GFOX building in downtown Hartford.) Tickets on sale April 8.

Deadlines May 2nd & 3rd

OBSOLETE
CALLING FOR WORKS ABOUT THE OUTDATED OR NO LONGER USEFUL

DEADLINE: MAY 2, 2022

Obsolescence is often recognized like an afterthought, after we’ve already moved on from a thing’s purpose. Many objects, ideas, and communication styles we use don’t last a lifetime, some hardly last a full year.

Can something be obsolete, but still have worth? If so, what does that look like?

OBSOLETE will be an exhibition about the vestigial, the replaced, the out-of-style, and the things that remain without necessarily being dead.

Submission deadline: May 2, 2022
