Another magical experience awaits you at the Elusie Gallery:
STORYWEAR
An art installation by Lauren Leja
April 11 - May 4th with an
Artist Reception on Opening
Day, 5-8pm.
April is Poetry Month in Easthampton, and is with great pleasure that we welcome Boston's Lauren Leja to the Elusie Gallery.
Lauren has been constructing artist books for years, but the pandemic lockdown gave her the time to explore the materials she had collected for decades: snapshots, diaries, antique textiles, and re-examine the very essence of the book. Can a dress be a book if it is a vehicle for text?
These considerations led to the inevitable yet organic synthesis:
STORYWEAR.
For this series, Leja transcribed both her own short stories (often inspired by vernacular snapshots) and also anonymous diary entries onto vintage baby clothes.
Lauren says: "I am fascinated with found objects, the collision of modern and antique, but mostly with the constant dialogue between feminism and femininity."
More information on the Elusie Gallery page of your website.

We are nine photographers who have been meeting regularly as a critique group since 2015. We have each pursued a variety of photographic genre: portraiture, documentary, multimedia, landscape, narrative, and abstraction.
Meeting together we have been able to take risks, expanding the boundaries of our idea of photography. What joins our diversity of visions is a commitment to each other, to pointed and supportive critique, and to exploring together our individual approaches to photographic art.
We have curated this exhibition to show both a coherent representation of individual work and the many ways photography has been pursued through our collaboration.

(R)evolution: Identity and Power in Puerto Rican and Diasporican Art
March 22 – June 8
The centerpiece and inspiration for this exhibition, which reflects upon colonialism and Puerto Rican resistance, is Miguel Luciano’s painting Cómo se dice Boricua en Inglés (1998), created in response to the centennial of the U.S. annexation of Puerto Rico following the Spanish-American War. The painting features a machete-wielding vejigante, the demon/trickster figure associated with the Loiza Aldea festival of Santiago Apostôl, in confrontation with Uncle Sam, alluding, together with smaller vignettes, to such issues as suppression of native language and culture, economic colonialism, and racial and ethnic stereotypes and hierarchies. Bringing works about these issues by other artists together with Miguel Luciano’s painting, the exhibition sheds light on Puerto Rico’s historic and contemporary challenges.
In addition to Miguel Luciano, other artists in the exhibition include Antonio Martorell, Juan Sánchez, Pablo Delano, Allora & Calzadilla, Yasmín Hernández, Danielle De Jesus, ADÁL, Omar Velázquez, and Ernest Lopez. A group of posters associated with the Puerto Rican Socialist Party (PSP) provide additional context.
This exhibition is supported in part by the Karen L. Chase Fund and a donation from an anonymous foundation.

MASTER PIECES 2024
18th Annual Exhibit for Emerging Masters
Open to current graduate students and MFA/MA/PhD degree recipients since January 2023.
Note: Manifest's board of directors has approved a special entry fee level for this project in order to make it more accessible to students.
Every year, Manifest offers an opportunity for current and recent graduate students to exhibit at our gallery in Cincinnati. This 18th installment of the Master Pieces project will continue to reveal the intensity and professionalism of students working towards their terminal academic degree in the field of art or design. Often, the most exceptional work comes out of these artists’ immersion in their culture of study and intellectual pursuit. Manifest’s goal, therefore, is to select works that set the standard of quality that the artist is expected to maintain throughout his or her professional career and justify the degree of Master. The full-color retrospective hardcover Manifest Exhibition Annual publication, a 'yearbook' for the season, will also serve as a visual documentation of these artists’ own benchmarks for years to come.
Final Deadline: April 21, 2024
