Artist Statement

My work is made through many layers of narrative and medium. Narratives evolve from different source material such as photography and found imagery. Recently I've been working on wood panels that allow me to scrape the surface and make the "process", part of the concept of the work. The clash between narratives often come from experimentation with ink, colored pencil, charcoal, acrylic, and oil mediums. Drama and theatricality are two essential aspects of my paintings.

Vista: A Study of the Land
Artist Reception: Friday, December 7, 5-8pm

Reynolds Fine Art is pleased to present Vista: A Study of the Land. This group exhibition will feature the work of nine national artists whose approaches to landscape painting are as diverse as their subject.

Vista is a glimpse of nature as translated through the eyes and hands of nine unique artists. Tranquil, ethereal landscapes are juxtaposed with ones that show signs of a vigorous, ever changing world. While one artist may employ the practice of landscape painting as a retreat from modern life, to stand in awe of natural beauty and recall the ideologies of past masters of the genre, another artist looks at man's imprint on the land and embraces both the tension and harmony created. Each scene, however, captures obsession and memory in paint.

In technique, each artist's approach varies just as much as the land's terrain. Vista is composed of minimalist to highly obscured views of the world. A landscape may be recreated though a very controlled, pensive hand, or its atmosphere may be captured through an artist embracing its unpredictable nature. Whether the landscape is used as the subject or simply a vehicle through which to explore the medium of painting, each image in this exhibition is sure to capture the viewer with its beauty and mystery. Not only are we invited to view the same landscape as the artists who painted it, but also to experience the same place in our own, individual way.

In Focus: Recent Acquisitions in Photography, on view in the McKernan Gallery from November 9 through December 30, 2012, will unveil the Museum’s emergent photography collection to the public for the first time. Although it was not until 1999 that the Museum began to incorporate photography into its holdings, the collection has grown steadily over the past 13 years. Organized in a chronological and thematic fashion, the exhibition consists of approximately 120 works that chart the development of photography over one and a half centuries to illuminate the importance of this medium in shaping this country’s visual culture.

The themes represented in the exhibition are: 19th-Century Portraiture and Local Photography; Landscape: Natural and Manmade; Photojournalism; Face and Figure; and Abstraction, Conceptualism, and Beyond. Well-known highlights include ones by New Britain’s own Sol LeWitt, and Dorothea Lange, Lewis Hine, William Wegman, Christine Breslin, Alfred Cheney Johnston and Nelson Augustus Moore. The exhibit will allow viewers to not only delve into the scope of the Museum’s permanent holdings in photography, but also to confront the variety of unexpected directions in which the genre of photography has moved since its inception.
