Artist Talk
Chris “Daze” Ellis
Friday, March 6, 1:30 pm

Chris “Daze” Ellis, the Happy and Bob Doran Artist in Residence, began his career as an artist spray-painting New York City subways in the mid-1970s before becoming a studio artist. Daze has gained international renown as a muralist, and his work is featured in the permanent collections of museums throughout the world. He is currently working on a multi-section mural in the lower lobby of the Gallery. In this talk, Daze discusses the mural and works on view in the modern and contemporary art galleries, including his own Crossroads (2012) and Neon Canyons (2012), as well as Martin Wong’s La Vida (1988). La Vida—a vibrant portrayal of New York’s Lower East Side in the 1980s—features portraits of Wong’s artistic and social contemporaries, including Daze.

Caravaggio’s Toys
PHOTOGRAPHS BY JOY BUSH
Artist opening on January 9th 2015
6-8pm

STATEMENT:

Caravaggio’s Toys pays homage to the idea of collecting as a social phenomena.  Photographing these objects as if each had the status of a relic, I approach them with the seriousness that Baroque painters would have given to the subjects of their portraits.  With the employment of chiaroscuro lighting and the placement of each toy in the camera's frame, I give larger than life importance and seriousness to these stuffed, lowbrow figures. The series extols the quality of light in the photographic image while maintaining a lively subtext of humor.

Art Guild of Middletown invites you to the following events:

George Aresco Colored Pencil Techniques Demonstration: January 8, 2015 . 7 pm -Art Guild of Middletown will be presenting a demonstration by Colored Pencil Artist George Aresco on Colored Pencil Techniques.
George Aresco has been interested in art ever since he was a child. His father was an aspiring sketch artist and this influenced George to keep pursuing his dream to make art and write and illustrate stories that appeal to his quirky sense of humor. Although George did not go to an art institute his siblings Jim and Elaine did, so he was never far from the art scene. Although George excels at pencil sketching and working with colored pencils, he also experiments with other art mediums. Most of the time George can be found collaborating on humorous cartoon ideas with his good friend and also accomplished artist, Bob Noreika. George is very well known by Connecticut artists as the owner of Wholesale Frame,a frame shop dedicated to aiding artists by offering high quality frames at affordable prices.
The demonstration will take place at Art Guild of Middletown's new home: Woodside Intermediate School on 30 Woodside Road, Cromwell,CT.
This presentation which is open to the public is free for Members of Art Guild of Middletown.
It is $5.00 for Non-members.
Membership in Art Guild of Middletown is $25 for one year.
