Carole P. Kunstadt, a graduate of Hartford Art School, deconstructs paper and text of old books.
She was inspired by the purchase of an 1844 parish Psalmody. She slices the pages into strips, then sews and weaves them together layering fine tissue paper and leaves of gold. the new images reference spirituality, and the temporal quality and vulnerability of life.

This Saturday, September 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. is a reception for Tony Carvalho in the
Gilbert Gallery
in the Main Dining Hall at 60 Main Street, Farmington, CT 06032. The
exhibit of Carvalho's paintings continues through October 3.
Tony
was born in Portugal and came to the Unites States at the age of five
where he has lived since, though he has often returned to the place of
his early youth. Some of the paintings in the exhibition are inspired by
the village of his origin. Other paintings are done directly from life
in Connecticut (scenes in the studio, still lives, and portraits) and
some of the paintings are poetic inventions configured on a large scale.
Tony earned his MFA from Western Connecticut State University in 2013.
He studied with, among others, Margaret Grimes, Marjorie Portnow, and
Riley Brewster. He has a BA from WCSU in both English Literature and
Painting. He has recently worked with Stanley Lewis at Chatauqua
Institute, School of Art in Chatauqua, NY. Tony is the recipient of the
W.B. Connor Trust Scholarship, the Antonio Alberetti
Award in Painting, and National Society of Collegiate Scholars. He has
shown his drawings at the Wooster Community Art Center in Danbury, CT.
This is his first one-person show of paintings.
The
Gilbert Gallery is open from 8 to 3:30 M-F and on Saturday and Sunday
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (During weekend hours, please ring the bell at

“EVOLVING” a wawa event at Artspace Gallery-Hartford, Connecticut –
From October 4 – 14, 2914, the ArtSpace Gallery, 555 Asylum Ave., will feature the artwork of eight local women artists. The women met several years ago through their connection with West Hartford Public Schools and are excited to present their work as a group for the third time. The work is varied in media, theme and style and, as the show title promises, presents each artist’s current point of exploration in a creative process that is constantly evolving.
The artists include Joanne Barry-Dutro, Francie Bergquist, Sheri Ellis, Marsha Lewis, Jo McGinnis, Donna Namnoum, Kelly Smurthwaite and Mary Lou Solomon and they reside in Bloomfield, Canton, Newington and West Hartford.
