“Broad Stripes and Bright Stars” Artist-led and Community-driven Events Begin at the Ely Center of Contemporary Art
Curated by Aicha Woods and Dave Coon, “Broad Stripes and Bright Stars” is a new exhibition on view at The Ely Center of Contemporary Art, 51 Trumbull Street, New Haven, CT. It presents 60+ years of artists who have creatively responded to the American Flag. Now, through creative workshops and open conversations,
The Ely Center of Contemporary Art invites you to participate and help bring the gallery walls to life! Join us in reflecting on the singular icon and myriad meanings of the flag. All events are free and open to the public through the generous support of The Arts Council of Greater New Haven and Wells Fargo.
Collage Workshop - Thursday, July 20, 2017 at 5:00pm
Featured artists Stanwyck Cromwell and Moussa Gueye will lead participants through a collage workshop. Gueye, a former IRIS client from Mauritania, and Cromwell, who immigrated from Guyana to Bloomfield, CT 40 years ago and has explored immigrant experience in his artistry through that time, will guide participants in translating identity into expression through the special art of collecting, juxtaposing, and collaging, which is integral to both artists’ own work. While collage materials are provided, attendees are invited to bring images, objects, or clippings that are significant or interesting to them.
Open Forum on the Flag & New Americans - Thursday July 20, 2017 at 7:00pm
Featured artists Stanwyck Cromwell, Moussa Gueye, Gabriella Svenningsen, and Susan Clinard will open a dialogue about their artistry as well as the flag’s special meanings for immigrants, refugees, and New Americans. In this informal public forum, we welcome everyone in our community to join in the conversation.
“Broad Stripes and Bright Stars” will be on view through August 12, 2017. Gallery visiting hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 5-8 pm, and Sunday 1-4 pm. Hunting in Wartime: Film Screening & Discussion w/ director Samantha Farinella
Hunting in Wartime will be screened followed by a Q&A session with the director, Samantha Farinellahttp://www.huntinginwartime.com/

Hunting in Wartime profiles Tlingit veterans from Hoonah, Alaska who saw combat during the Vietnam War. The veterans talk about surviving trauma, relating to Vietnamese civilians, readjusting to civilian life, and serving a government that systematically oppresses native people. Their stories give an important human face to the combat soldier and show the lasting effects of war on individuals, families and communities.

It won the 2016 Big Sky Award at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival as well as the James Aronson Award in Social Justice. It has been featured at over 20 venues so far including the National Archives, the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival, American Indian Film Festival and the Hanoi Cinematheque in Vietnam.

Jennifer Day
"Small Business"

Through July 30

Mixing medieval technology with  contemporary concepts of sustainable energy, Jennifer Day crafts miniature worlds scaled at 1/8 inch to a foot. Taking cues from today's exigencies to restore, recycle and repurpose, the artist builds all manner of gears, vehicles and machinery from backyard sticks, toothpicks and scraps from her own frame-making. These  worlds encapsulate the work of the inventor , turning it into an impossible possibility.

In Transit seeks art that is connected to travelers and their transit experience in both the literal and metaphoric sense. Think: multifaceted transitory moments, whether across, around, over, under or through bridges, roads, deserts, forests, time, and mind. This exhibition highlights the tangible and intangible elements of transportation, being in transition, in motion, in-between and neither here nor there - on a journey, in all its permutations.
