Breezin' into May

City Gallery at 994 State Street, New Haven, Ct. 06511, 203-782-62489,
http://www.city-gallery.org www.city-gallery.org is presenting: “Mixing Memory with Desire”, an exhibit of new sculptural works by Meg Bloom.  The show will be on view for the month of May (May1 through June 1, 2014).
The opening reception is Saturday May 3, 2014 from 2-5pm.
Admission is free.

Finding beauty in the imperfect or impermanent, acknowledging moments of change, and engaging with the process of transformation form the basis of Bloom’s work.

Bloom’s process is guided by the mix of planning and chance that her materials offer to the imagery.  She has developed her own method of making and then assembling paper made from abaca and flax pulps into large sculptural forms and smaller collages. The final sculptures are a revisioning of her memories.

We would like to invite you to view the exhibit.  Please come by the gallery Thursday through Sunday from 12-4pm, or call for an appointment. Admission is free.

Mike Alewitz's Slideshows  & Talk:

The Massacre at Kent State University,
aftermath and meaning for the
antiwar movement today.

"Another world is possible" by Mike Alewitz

May 4, 2014 will mark the 44th anniversary of the massacre at Kent State University. On that day in 1970, the National Guard opened fire on a peaceful protest against President Richard Nixon's announcement that the US had invaded Cambodia - a major escalation of the war in Southeast Asia. The attack left four dead and nine wounded. The massacre at Kent was followed two days later with the police barrage of bullets into a dormitory at Jackson State in Mississippi
that left two students dead and an unknown number of others wounded.

The massacres at Kent and Jackson, along with deep hatred of the war, sparked a national student strike that was to become the largest political demonstration in U.S. history. Tens of thousands of students occupied their universities and used the facilities to reach out with their anti-war message. The strike played a crucial role in the movement that eventually forced an end to the war. Mike Alewitz was a student leader at Kent State - Chairman of the Kent Student Mobilization Committee Against the War, an eyewitness to the massacre
and a leader of the national student strike that followed.
