NXTHVN presents our second annual Black History Month spoken word event, Voices in Power, hosted by our 2022-2023 High School Apprentices. Voices in Power showcases the power and impact that Black voices have had in America, and the Black diaspora.
This gathering includes performances by some of the top spoken word artists from around the country, along with our very own High School Apprentices: Ashlynn, Issac, Laurianne, Victor, Assiata, Bri, Luca, and Ryan.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION

Celebrate Black History Month at The MATT with a scavenger hunt to find art pieces from Black Artists, collages inspired by Alma Thomas, and a meet and greet with The Masters of the Bee, the first all- black Ultimate Frisbee Team in the United States, recently inducted into the Ultimate Hall of Fame.

Lary Bloom has been a writer and editor in Connecticut for decades, and is well known to many members of the community. His essays appear frequently in The New Haven Independent, presenting his wry, affectionate perspective on life in New Haven. Bloom's most recent book before this was a biography of artist Sol LeWitt. Over the years he's written many books, but none as directly personal as this collection of essays. |

[Voicings]
Now through April 15, 2023 [Voicings] wonders about the conditions, capacities, and powers of voices to utter sounds, words, and signs. The exhibition is inspired by the numerous asides, coughs, stutters, glitched signs, and breaths from on-screen vocalizations and calling devices over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic—at a time when embodied voicings seemed rare if not impossible. Works by artists Mira Dayal, Dominique Duroseau, JJJJJerome Ellis, Nikita Gale, Christine Sun Kim, Amiko Li, Gordon Hall, Joseph Keckler, Matt Keegan, and Sahra Motalebi meditates on the pluralities and slippages of voices. Voicings tremble in ongoing collectivity amongst vibrating vocal cords and also hold vibration, or vibrato, with one another. They speak from the page in between brackets, live in the motion of fingers and the creaking positions of bodies, and shape language collectively. Gil Scullion’s exhibition “Look at Me, Look at You” features work from his 2021 series of the same name. “Look at Me, Look at You” is one part of a multi-part project dealing with a sense of existential paralysis in the face of what seem to be social, political and geophysical inevitabilities titled “I Saw It Coming But Stood There Like A Jerk Anyway.” This set of stenciled spray paintings contains single and repeated patterns of a suited male figure peering outward through handheld binoculars. The gallery installation of serialized surveillance images by an unknown observer is inherently unnerving and offers insights into authoritarian critique. Confronted with a multiplicity of images the viewer is out numbered and immediately put on the defensive. However, when viewing an individual rather than a multiple figure composition, the act of looking transforms into a more intimate mutual act. In this perspective the reciprocal gaze connects with more convergent cultural, philosophical, political, and psychological references and associative interpretations.
The Elusie Gallery is switching things around for its traditional February Group exhibit, by having Words being the featured elements of the exhibit, and Images taking the supportive role.
Writers, poets and other wordsmiths will display written material on the walls of the gallery, in a variety of ways, all having Passion as the theme.

A slideshow of Robert Sweeney's solo exhibition, Landscapes of the Connecticut River Valley, has been recently added to the William Baczek Fine Arts YouTube channel. The exhibition includes paintings specifically of the Connecticut River, but also of the farmlands, marshes, and the towns, cities and industrial landscapes created by the effects of a major river. This exhibition will be on display from Wednesday, February 15 through Saturday, April 1, 2023.

Saturday, March 4 1pm The lushly colored surfaces and crisp machinelike forms in Matt Paweski’s works often suggest functionality, yet they emerge from an intuitive, manual process of drawing, cutting, painting, reconfiguration, and experimentation. Curator Jared Quinton will discuss how Paweski’s background in fabrication informs the artist’s practice and can expand our idea of contemporary sculpture. |

HARTFORD, CONN. Real Art Ways will present an artist talk with Howard el-Yasin on Thursday, March 9th at 6pm. Specific Matter is an exhibition of el-Yasin's sculptural installations. The exhibition will be on view through Sunday, March 19th. Gallery hours 2-9pm Wednesday-Sunday. Gallery admission is free. |

Howard el-Yasin will discuss his artistic practice and delve deeper into Specific Matter at Real Art Ways. The gallery installation includes an immersive suspended piece comprised of thousands of baked banana peels sourced from the artist’s community.
Says el-Yasin, "This body of work is an accumulation of two of my ongoing collection practices: banana skins and dryer lint. Both materials are raw and residual, insofar as they are often discarded as waste by people. For several years now, I've been collecting banana skins and dryer lint from people I meet, from friends and family - as well as from my own household." The Crossing: A Juried Exhibition is open to all artists and mediums. We hope to receive artists' best and most recent work.
The Crossing will be juried by Charles Reyburn
It is also an opportunity for new artists from across other bridges and geographical barriers to get involved with Hygienic Art and downtown New London. Works must not exceed 60" in any direction, suitably ready for hanging and sculpture no more than 50lbs.

Note: Manifest's board of directors has approved a special entry fee level for this project in order to make it more accessible to students.
Every year Manifest offers an opportunity just for current and recent graduate students to exhibit at our gallery in Cincinnati. This 17th installment of the Master Pieces project will continue to reveal the intensity and professionalism of students working towards their terminal academic degree in the field of art or design. Often the most exceptional work comes out of these artists’ immersion in their culture of study and intellectual pursuit. Manifest’s goal, therefore, is to select works that set the standard of quality that the artist is expected to maintain throughout his or her professional career and justify the degree of Master. The full-color retrospective hardcover Manifest Exhibition Annual publication, a 'yearbook' for the season, will serve as a visual documentation of these artists’ own benchmarks for years to come.

In the 19th and early 20th century, Rockville, CT was home to the renowned still life artist, Charles Ethan Porter. Porter not only studied art at the National Academy of Design in New York City, he was one of the first Black artists to exhibit there. He was the only Black artist at the turn of the century who painted still lifes. His work can be found in collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Wadsworth Athenaeum, as well as several private collections.
