New Exhibit by ECA High School Students at CAW

A new student-run and student-curated exhibition is now on view through mid-June in the upper and lower Hilles galleries. The three emerging shows, "Small, Small World," “Still Things” and “Senior Showcase,” feature works by the visual arts high school students at Educational Center for the Arts (ECA).
In the lower Hilles galleries at CAW:
“Small, Small World” showcases works created during the semester-long 3D/4D interdisciplinary media course taught by Willie Stewart and Hanni Bresnick that reflects what happens when art shifts size - from human scale to very, very tiny.
“Still Things: Digital Photo” taught by Kevin Van Aelst, explores several genres of object photography from the conceptual to the humorous and the purely aesthetic.
In the upper Hilles gallery at CAW:
“Senior Showcase” highlights works created during the yearlong collaboration between ECA and CAW. In this relationship, ECA’s high school students have the opportunity to work with professional artists in a studio setting throughout the year. Every week ECA students complete their course work at CAW where they are influenced by and contribute to CAW’s distinguished and vibrant artist community.
The Fairfield Public Library is located at 1080 Old Post Road in charming downtown Fairfield, and is conveniently open 7 days a week. Please visit the website for hours of operation.

Since its inception, the Academic Artists Association has grown from its modest beginnings to a national membership of more than 250. AAA is unique in its list of members. When an artist’s work has been selected at least two times for the Annual National Exhibition, they are invited to become a member.
Realism, as defined by the Academic Artist, would be representational art work encompassing a wide range of art from soft impressionism, through detailed photo realism in watercolor, pastel, oil, and acrylic mediums. Sculpture is also exhibited in stone, bronze and many modern and unique mediums.

Sarah Hulsey: “Source Material”
Nancy Diessner: “An Atmosphere of Water and Dust”

Sarah Hulsey: “Source Material”
My work is concerned with the architecture that underpins language, which we use effortlessly but with little awareness of its beauty and complexity. Even a simple sentence has layers and layers of organization, governed by a complex set of rules and interactions happening below the level of our conscious knowledge. Small pieces of information (atomic components, as it were) combine into ever larger units within the concurrent linguistic systems at play. These components are organized into elegant structures that exist only in the mind. In my artwork, I analyze these structures and create visual correlates, looking for poetry and resonance in the rich patterns that emerge.
I compose abstract frameworks by building up nested and connected forms set within reticulated grids. Networks of these grids serve as armatures on which small elements abut, merge, and grow into higher order objects. In these pages, the underlying structures of sentences are segmented, excerpted, and then recombined into forms reflecting their core, essential relationships.
|
| Nancy Diessner: “An Atmosphere of Water and Dust”
Sun stain on blanket. Each particle of light has traveled from the sun to my feet. How can something so small have made it so far? Up close, the stream of photons would look like a meteor shower. My feet play with it. The vertigo of scale (the space between a photon and me and a star) is a foretaste of death. — Hernan Diaz, from Truth
We are surrounded by the actions, reactions, and interactions of water and dust, tangibly and intangibly, visibly and invisibly, spanning the distance between a star and a particle of pollen resting on the surface of water. Water and dust are our atmosphere, our weather, and our crisis.
That range of space and time makes our lives and our worries the size of a hair on the lip of a gnat.

(international biennial gallery exhibit — season launcher)

PAINTED - BIENNIAL 2023
An International Competitive Biennial Survey
of Contemporary Painting
At some point many generations ago society reached a level where ordinary people could spend a lifetime perfecting their ability to mix and apply paint, in extraordinary ways. A decade ago, to mark Manifest's 10th season the gallery kicked off a permanent biennial project surveying painting as an art form. It was first presented in fall 2013 to inaugurate our expanded gallery. PAINTED 2023 will be the sixth biennial presentation of this international survey of contemporary painting.
Every two years PAINTED launches our exhibition season by presenting a competitive group exhibition focused exclusively on painting, with no other thematic restrictions. It is a gallery exhibit that calls for works of painting by artists around the world as they carry the tradition forward, or reform it for another day. This exhibit has no defined expectation for type, style, subject, or specific media of work to be considered or selected. Submissions can range from the most traditional to the most conceptual, abstract, or experimental, including those which push the boundaries of the common definition of what constitutes 'painting'. The only criteria beyond excellent quality is that works must in some way represent an honest approach to painting.
Submission deadline: June 24, 2023
